There are two common critiques of EVs these days. Number one, they sound like sewing machines or vacuum cleaners unless you pump some artificial noise inside the cabin or out the back. The other is that they're way too complicated and uber-expensive as a result. Well, Subaru didn't completely fix every complaint levied against the Solterra, their first North American EV. But they certainly made a good-faith effort with the mid-cycle refresh. Much more so than other OEMs who don't get it right the first time.
For a controversial and polarizing EV developed in tandem with Toyota, the refreshed Solterra is a make-or-break moment for the platform. If glaring issues with questionable design cues, a paltry range, and a stark lack of power weren't addressed with this latest update, the platform, also known as the Toyota bZ4X, could be written off entirely. Well, at the 2025 New York International Auto Show, with its companion, the Trailseeker, on display as well, you get two electric Subarus in one.
