The launch of the all-new BMW 3-Series drew sharp criticism.
It was too boring, they said. BMW's design had gone stale, others wrote. While the critics weren't wrong, I don't think anyone was prepared for what would come next.
It's safe to say that BMW has taken a bit of a walk on the wild side with the upcoming 4-Series. This is evidenced by the 4-Series Concept that has extremely large, vertical kidney grilles as well as a shape that's more akin to the Audi A5 and Infiniti Q60 coupe.
In other words, it's pretty weak.
But things took an even worse turn this week. While leaked images have shown rather hideous looks of the upcoming 4-Series and M3/M4, we were flabbergasted by what we saw from the latest leak. Likely belonging to a sporting variant of the upcominig M440i, it was the front end of the next-gen 4. Its vertical kidney grille meshing into what appears to be one large front grille.
Simply put, it's not particularly attractive or exciting. In fact, to me, it looks like a really bad impression care of Hyundai's design team.
This got me thinking: How could of BMW done the all-new 4-Series BETTER? The first thing that popped to mind was the angry-looking and drop-dead sexy 328 Hommage. In my opinion, I think it's the sexiest design study the company has produced.
Meshing the looks of the well-regarded E30 with the tall, vertical kidney grilles from BMW's early days, it's an especially unique take on what could've been.
Although the next-gen 4-Series has yet to be revealed, I've got to ask: Has BMW BLOWN IT with the all-new 4's "face" from what we can see?
