With the demise of the big VW Phaeton, the Germans have been looking at alternative homes for the V-10 diesel engines inventory - and surprisingly, Bentley may be on the receiving end of a powerful, quiet, economical gift from those nice people at VW.

The new coupe, which shares a number of major components with the Phaeton (including most of it's floor pan), is more than capable of housing the big V-10 diesel power unit, and engineers suggest that only minor modifications are required. The transmission, capable of handling 1000lb/ft of torque will be un-flustered by the V-10's output and as both engine and coupe are very insulated from noise, vibration and harshness, these two appear to be a perfect match on the test bed at least.

How will the world deal with a 30mpg Bentley?
