Auto Spies Exclusive: Cayenne to get Phaeton V-10 diesel?
Plus, an even more interesting rumor...
class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none" Porsche and Bentley seriously looking at defunct VW Phaeton's V-10 diesel engine!
With VW finally accepting that the Phaeton luxury car is dead (through sales anyway) the Germans have been looking at alternative homes for the brilliant V10 diesel engine that was fitted to the ill-fated super saloon. Two very surprising options appear to be on the horizon. Porsche and Bentley (see other story) -stalwarts of the petrol/gasoline engine.
The Porsche Cayenne (based on the diesel powered VW Touareg anyway) may be the first car in the manufacturers range to get a diesel engine – offering the car massive torque and fantastic mileage. This would be an inexpensive addition to the Porsche range and in certain parts of the world a diesel 4x4 Cayenne would sell in good numbers. Porsche is looking at this option, not to alienate existing customers, but to boost flagging sales of the marque.
An even more interesting rumor…
Inside Zuffenhausen, some people are of the opinion that the Cayenne may need to be canned (just like the Phaeton) to put money, production facilities and resources into more sell-able "core" models like 911.
