UAW President Shawn Fain, who hasn't endorsed President Joe Biden for a second term, sent a clear message to political leaders: "Support our cause, or you won't get our endorsement." Fain shared this message at the union's national political conference in the nation's capital, where it's uncertain if an endorsement for Biden will happen.

Fain explained, "When we decide to make a decision, we'll make the announcement," when asked about potential endorsements. He didn't comment on whether Biden was invited to the conference, and the White House hasn't responded to the matter.

The UAW gathering, described by Fain as a "strategy session" and "war room," follows a costly six-week strike last year targeting major automakers, resulting in new labor contracts. Fain committed to securing more gains for workers in 2028, including organizing efforts at companies like Tesla and Toyota, a move supported by Biden.

In November, the UAW initiated an organizing campaign covering 13 automakers, aiming to significantly increase its representation of auto workers if successful.

Regarding the upcoming election, Fain emphasized its importance, a sentiment echoed by UAW Regional 8 Director Tim Smith, covering Washington, D.C., and 11 states. Smith highlighted the need to maintain the White House, hold the Senate, and regain the House to protect American working families.

Biden, the self-proclaimed pro-worker president, previously joined a picket line in support of striking workers, expressing solidarity with their demands for better wages, benefits, and job security. However, his focus on fighting climate change, including efforts to reduce vehicle emissions and boost the U.S. EV market, has occasionally clashed with labor-friendly goals.

The UAW has cautioned against moving too quickly on EVs, advocating for a "just transition" with robust labor standards and high pay for workers. Former President Donald Trump, a leading candidate for the Republican presidential nomination, has sought the UAW's endorsement, but the union remains unsupportive, citing Trump's perceived lack of labor friendliness.
