The aging Ford Explorer has been given a new lease on life thanks to a comprehensive facelift that includes exterior, interior, and technology upgrades. The Explorer is one of the oldest names in SUV history, but it has gone soft over the years. The first two generations were based on the Ranger ladder-frame chassis, but since the introduction of the third generation in 2002, it has been a unibody design.

Therefore, the emphasis is on comfort and on-road performance. For proof, look no further than the streamlined range, which no longer includes the King Ranch and Timberline options. The latter came standard with 4WD, an off-road suspension, and a limited-slip differential at the rear. The new range consists of the Active, ST-Line, ST, and Platinum trims, all of which get rear-wheel drive as standard. All-wheel drive is still available as an option, however.
