Many people still believe the anti-EV propaganda that electric vehicles are time bombs ready to explode at any moment. Statistics show EVs are ten times less likely to catch fire than ICE vehicles. However, there are a few things that contribute to a bad image. Because they seldom happen, EV fires tend to get more coverage from the media, which often exaggerates the story to get more attention. It's similar to car and plane crashes. While car crashes are an everyday occurrence, plane crashes get more coverage despite flying being incredibly safe.
 
This came again into focus on Monday morning as a Tesla Semi crashed on I-80 in California. The crash caused the battery pack to ignite and release huge amounts of toxic fumes into the air. The collision occurred around 3:15 AM near Emigrant Gap while the Semi truck traveled eastbound at the Laing Road offramp. According to the California Highway Patrol's incident log, the truck crashed onto the right shoulder and into the trees.
