Carmakers are at a crossroads, as the automotive industry is about to change, in more ways than one. Not only is everybody pushing for a switch to electric drivetrains, but some of the companies doing business in this field have also begun investing in alternative means of mobility, including vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) aircraft, while others are dipping their toes in robotics. And at the rate things are going, it will only be a matter of time until more players join in.
 
Japanese carmaker Toyota is involved in pretty much all of the above. Aside from making cars, the company is investing in VTOL maker Joby Aviation. It is also involved in the development of a rover for extraterrestrial worlds together with the Japanese Space Agency (JAXA), and it research into robotics is considered cutting edge.
