After reporting higher-than-expected deliveries in 2024 and improved guidance for 2025, Xiaomi is now facing negative press for the first time. The company is under scrutiny after an SU7 sedan, its first EV model, crashed and burned, killing all three passengers.
Xiaomi has been the darling of Chinese and international press for successfully launching a car. This achievement is even more impressive when you consider that Apple failed to do it. Xiaomi impressed even more after the SU7 sedan proved a resounding success, with almost 140,000 units delivered by the end of 2024. The carmaker guided for 350,000 units in 2025, and it appears on track to deliver, with 29,000 units sold in March.
The SU7 has been praised for its safety technologies. Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun explained on social media how a composite protective layer keeps the battery pack safe in an accident. However, this didn't help much in the SU7's first documented fatal crash. After hitting a highway guardrail, the Xiaomi SU7 caught fire, killing three college students inside.
