Who said diesels are bad for your and my health? Are we sure Dieselgate even existed? Well, BMW Australia obviously didn't hear anything about all that and now happily promotes the 40d xDrive version for the X3 model range.

Ironies aside, the G45 fourth generation BMW X3 sold in the Land Down Under has something that no one else has – a torque-happy inline-six diesel mill. So, when the latest iteration of the premium compact crossover SUV was introduced last year, it arrived in places like Europe and North America with the 2.0-liter B48 inline-four turbo mild hybrid, the 3.0-liter B58 inline-six turbo MHEV, and a plug-in hybrid plus the 2.0-liter B47 inline-four turbo diesel mild hybrid, depending on the region.

Obviously, the 2.0-liter gas model was at the base of the pyramid, while the M50 xDrive using the 3.0-liter was at the top of the food chain, and the plug-in hybrid sat happily between them. Well, all three of them – sans the diesel four-pot – were also available in the Land Down Under when BMW Australia started local deliveries of the G45 BMW X3. But now there's also a diesel option – and a mighty one.
