Slate is taking the Right to Repair saga quite seriously, and it's pushing back against the idea that cars should only be serviced by authorized dealers. That's why the 2027 Slate truck will feature a rather generous warranty, and it's also why the automaker is partnering with 3,000 independent shops to carry out any covered repairs. And as an added bonus to those who'd prefer to do things their way, owners of the compact electric pickup will have access to Slate U, an online repair portal that will guide people through most maintenance processes.

Slate took a shot at legacy car manufacturers – many of whom are discouraging owners from working on their own cars – in announcing its warranty and repair policy, saying that it engineered its vehicles to be the least expensive in America to own, insure, and service. That means that, in addition to its reasonable $24,950 base price, the Slate truck will be easy to repair thanks to its reliance on modular parts that don't require brand-specific tools or computer equipment. Even for those not interested in DIY repairs, the approach should lead to less "book time" at the mechanic, which auto shops charge based on the estimated hours a job should take.
