There was a time, not many moons ago, when comparing two German performance sedans would strictly revolve around their engine displacement, the number of cylinders, which of their transmissions shifts faster and which one has a cooler-sounding exhaust.
Those times slowly began disappearing once the EU decided to come up with more and more regulations that aim to directly curb pollution (whether harmful particle emissions or simply noise), yet indirectly also sterilize whatever remained of the old ways of creating a performance car. For example, in the last couple of years or so, you can barely hear the vast majority of sports sedans that are still powered at least in part by an internal combustion engine in the EU.
