BMW is putting around €2 billion into German vehicle and battery production, with the 3 Series G50 and Neue Klasse battery-electric models at the center of it all, while simultaneously cutting back on model variants. Roughly €1 billion is going into the Dingolfing and Munich plants, with another billion invested in the Irlbach-Strasskirchen facility.
The redesigned 3 Series hails from the Dingolfing plant, whereas the i3 comes from Munich. Said combo says more about BMW's latest strategy than another round of corporate efficiency vernacular. The company is becoming more selective about which cars get development money, which variants deserve to live, and where those vehicles are made.
