Auto Spies world exclusive: More 2004 BMW 5-series first impressions

More feedback from another spy who has driven the car

Impressions and notes from the log of one of our European spies:

001,

I got a chance to drive the new five over in Europe recently during testing...

It drives remarkably similar to the new seven.

It as not as hard as the current five but engine performance is outstanding...very powerful and smooth, much quieter than the current car. It also gets a little better mileage.

iDrive interface is much more efficient and less complex than in the seven.

Interior space feels smaller inside although the official measurements are larger than the current five (similar to the new E-class)

Quality of materials are not as luxurious as in the seven...the look is more sporty.

The exterior is better looking than the current seven, more well thought out.

When customers see the car in person, it will grow on them.

The iDrive controller is not in the most ergonomic position for the hand.

Trunk space is phenomenal.

Interior storage space could have been implemented much better...there is very little space to store things.

Dash gauges are very sexy looking.

Now I have driven this and the new E and the drive of the five wins hands down.

More details as I get them...

Over and out,

005
