Man charged with stealing $1M from local senior citizen

A Florida man was charged Monday in federal court with defrauding an elderly Shrewsbury woman for nearly $1 million, the U.S. Attorney's office said.

Christos Kyriazis, 41, of St. Petersburg, Fla., was charged with mail fraud and interstate transportation of property taken by fraud.

U.S. attorneys allege that Kyriazis met the woman, whose name was not released, in 2001 and claimed to be an experienced financial advisor who could help her invest her money and used the $975,000 she sent him to purchase a new car and pay his rent.

The law suit states that after convincing the elderly victim to cash in a legitimate annuity worth more than $800,000 and deposit it in her bank account, Kyriazis then persuaded the woman to send him a check for $787,000 to an entity labeled with the words "Investment Group" in it, to be invested on her behalf.

Instead, the lawsuit states, Kyriazis used that money to buy 2,000 gold coins, pay his rent for a year and buy a brand new Porsche automobile.
