Some small auto-rental firms around the nation have specialized in unusual vehicles. Beverly Hills Rent-A-Car, with seven locations in the Los Angeles area, rents cars like the Mini Cooper for $99 a day and Ferrari 360 Spider sports car for $2,500 a day.
Specialty vehicles are becoming a small but fast-growing niche within the car rental industry, Abrams says.
Avis, which along with Budget is part of Cendant Car Rental Group, plans to rent Hummers for up to $150 a day.
The H3 SUVs will show up first in Denver, Salt Lake City, Seattle, Dallas, Phoenix and Portland, Ore. As more H3s are added to the fleet, Avis will have them in 10 cities by year's end and eventually 30 cities, says Executive Vice President Scott Deaver.
