Fields, 44, is a man in a hurry. When he is not rallying the troops, he is working on a restructuring plan that calls for massive job cuts, factory closures and an overhaul of Ford's brands.
He's no longer Ford's up-and-coming star. His moment has come, and he has to deliver more than a slick monologue. He has to save Ford Motor Co. And the clock is ticking.
"Our final priority is speed. Warp speed," Fields said in a recent memo. "We need a sense of urgency like never before. The worst action is inaction, and the market and our competitors are not waiting one moment for us. If we want to win -- and I know we do -- we must take back our future. And we must take it back now."
