Why did BMW reverse the Steptronic shift order

In real
sequential gearboxes (like race cars) ALWAYS has been pushing the gearshift
lever forward to downshift (in the steptronic mode) and pulled backward to
upshift, just take a look at any CART or INDY race.
So the 2001
3 series was the one that have had the system working in the opposite
direction.
