Ladies and gentlemen, start your engines.

The flag is about to drop on a new year in the worldwide auto industry, and the race starts here, at the 2006 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

After the union laborers cue on those klieg lights in Cobo Center Sunday morning, more than 6,800 journalists and auto industry executives from around the world will be elbowing their way onto the show floor to see the Who's Who of the industry and the future of cars and trucks.

This year, that future won't include many new trucks.
