Is it an accident that luxury cars dominated this year's New York International Auto Show?

Some of the most desirable name brands-- Acura, Audi, Infiniti, Lexus and Mercedes-Benz -- have new vehicles on display. Many of the cars have extravagant performance capabilities, such as the 507-horsepower Mercedes E63 AMG sedan and the Lexus LS 600h Lgas/electric-hybrid sedan, which has more power than a Corvette or a Porsche 911.

BMW's U.S. chief Tom Purves was checking out the overhauled Infiniti G35 sedan from Nissan Motor, which will compete against BMW's recently overhauled, entry-level 3 Series model. The Nissan stand was one of the hottest at the media preview, housing both the handsome new Infiniti and the re-done Nissan Altima sedan, which will go on sale this fall. The Altima is Nissan's top-seller, as well as the most profitable vehicle to come out of the Renault-Nissan alliance.
