Universal car phone adaptor finally on its way

Did we die and go to heaven?

Mercedes-Benz to offer new universal interface for mobile phones

  • Simple phone swap-over with plug-in adapter

  • Automatic access to all operating and display functions
From June this year, Mercedes-Benz will be offering a new, fully integrated universal mobile phone interface which will allow a variety of mobile phone models to be connected to the on-board electronic network simply and conveniently. In this way drivers will be able to enjoy all the typical Mercedes convenience and safety features when using these phones, namely the hands-free function, telephone operation via the multifunction steering wheel and monitoring via the central display unit or the COMAND communication centre (where specified).

Whereas these features were previously restricted to a single mobile phone model, the newly developed universal mobile phone interface (UHI) serves as a standard interface for phones by Nokia, Motorola and Siemens. The phone is connected to the universal interface in the fitted console with the aid of an adapter which is specific to the particular model of phone. Adapters can be supplied via Mercedes-Benz dealers and subsidiaries. The UHI controller complete with aerial, hands-free system and full networking can be fitted ex works as an option on new Mercedes-Benz car models.

Auto Spies Perspective: As boring as this release sounds, this is a major step forward that ALL companies should adopt. Kudos to MB for leading the way!!!!
