National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced today that it will investigate Chrysler’s Jeep Grand Cherokee for possible fuel-tank defects.

This comes after 55 fire-related deaths in crashes were reported. According to NHTSA, the investigation covers 3 million vehicles from the 1993 through 2004 model years. “The existence of these post-crash fires does not, by itself, establish a defect,” the agency said. “Further review and investigation into these incidents is needed.
