According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the roads are the safer than just about ever. Traffic deaths have hit the lowest level since 1950, the year vehicle-related deaths began to be recorded.

Although we may like to believe it is due to cars becoming safer over the years, Transportation Secretary, Ray LaHood, said that a poor economy may be helping keep drivers alive. This is because trips for entertainment usually are the deadliest.

Obviously as the economy has remained weak, consumers tend to stray from spending money frivolously.

Traffic deaths have hit their lowest level since 1950, the year fatalities behind the wheel began to be tracked, according to the latest government statistics.

Car crashes killed 33,808 in 2009, a nearly 10% drop from the year before, according to data from the Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
