BMW X5 sales dropping like a rock
Will the fall refresh be enough?
April sales of the X5 series declined 33.5% when compared to last April.
For the first four months of 2003 sales have declined 21.7% when compared to the same period of 2002.
It looks like all those new models on the market are taking their toll on the sales of the X5.
Exact sales figures published May 1 by BMW NA are as follows:
MODEL APR 03 YTD 03 APR 02 YTD 02
X5 3.0i 1,960 7,970 3,002 10,954
X5 4.4i 646 2,652 1,003 2,809
X5 4.6is 110 404 81 319
TOTALS 2,716 11,026 4,086 14,082
Auto Spies perspective: There is a lot of new competion in the marketplace (with more coming). The X5 is sorely missing more cargo room and a third seat. Unfortunately, the refresh won't be enough to bring them back to the top of the heap. Our advice? Add a third seat, way more power, drop the price, have finish materials as good as the new Range Rover and implement a better suspension system. (sport version is most uncomfortable SUV we've ever driven!)
