The auto industry recalled 20.3 million vehicles in 2010 - the highest number called back since 2004, the government said today.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said that automakers had 648 recall campaigns and called back 20.3 million vehicles.

The number of campaigns is the second highest in history - behind only 2008's 685 recall campaigns. The number of vehicles recalled is the third highest in history - behind 2004 with 30.8 million vehicles and 2000 with 24.6 million vehicles.
