If you have been questioning whether MINI has abandoned its small car roots, fear not. That's because BMW Group will be producing a car much like what was seen at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show.

Remember the Rocketman Concept? If you do, you're looking at what is suppose to be the next vehicle in MINI's portfolio. Said to be marginally bigger than the original Mini Cooper, this "mini" MINI is going to be a car that sticks to the original's formula; however, there will be a modern twist to it. This MINI will take elements from BMW's project i, along with other developments at BMW Group and implement them into this tiny package.

That means you can expect carbon fiber, aluminum and an electric powertrain to make an appearance. If an EV doesn't sound too appealing to you, Auto Motor Und Sport says it will also be working on gasoline and diesel variants as well.

It’s the car that fans of the original Mini have been waiting for – and it could be the biggest-selling new MINI yet. With stringent emissions regulations and spiralling petrol prices, the demand for compact cars
is going through the roof.
 
And the new baby MINI is set to head a new breed of penny-pinching small cars that prove you don’t have to sacrifice style and driving fun for low running costs. Based on the Rocketman concept shown at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this year, the ‘mini’ MINI will expand the burgeoning brand even further.

It will create a new entry point and mark the beginning of a new era, too, with a range of three-cylinder engines on offer, lightweight materials throughout and an all-electric version in the pipeline...
