Auto Spies World Exclusive: 2005 Mercedes-Benz S-class- Part 1 Here’s what Auto express says…
Highlights:
According to a Mercedes spokesman, the new flagship won't grow overall in length or width but will feature a lengthened wheelbase with the front and rear wheels pushed further to the edges of the arches.
The new S-class will feature a design quite different from the current car. In fact, design elements of the up-coming GST, which itself will be based on the chassis of the new S-class, will be carried over to the new S-class, too. The car will be given a prominent waist line underneath the side windows, reaching from the bonnet straight through to the boot lid - a simple trick to disguise the true height of the boot without destroying the overall elegance. The front will be dominated by a very flat and wide grille.
It is too early still to give concrete information about chassis and electronic - however, air suspension and huge 19- or 20-inch wheels will be standard
Next S-Class Gets Stylish May-Kover The most obvious change is the styling, which at the front end has undergone a dramatic overhaul. The smooth lines of the current model have made way for new oval headlamps and more aerodynamic wings. There's even a bit of the Maybach about it! Meanwhile, the rear end is more rounded, following the design cues of the E-Class. However, the biggest changes will take place under the skin. The newcomer, known internally as W221, will be a showcase of technology. Safety is high on the agenda, with an advanced protection system known as Presafe II. All models will come with standard pedestrian airbags, which sense in a split-second if the car is about to hit someone and shoot out of the radiator grille to cushion the impact. In terms of luxury, the S-Class will give its passengers a sense of well being. It will use a new 'driver interface' system, similar to BMW's iDrive, where all the controls can be activated at the touch of a button. The in-car entertainment set-up has been developed in conjunction with Finnish mobile phone giant Nokia and, in addition to conventional CD, Minidisc and MP3 players, will feature an integrated phone which can share its number with the owner's personal handset. Optional extras will include a built-in DVD player, with individual screens and headphones for all passengers. As well as the engine from the current S-Class, the car will get two new units - a 4.0-litre V8 diesel offering more than 400bhp, plus a new twin-turbo 6.5-litre petrol V12, developing at least 550bhp. The latter will use direct-injection technology similar to VW's FSI set-up, so despite its mind-blowing performance, the car should return about 27mpg. The new S-Class will make its world debut at the 2005 Geneva Motor Show.
