Fiat-Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne said the recent political crisis in Italy will make it more likely that the group will be based in Michigan.
Controversial Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi resigned on Saturday as the country struggled to approve a package of austerity measures mandated by the European Union.
Marchionne said the situation in Italy had made him look harder at other countries for the eventual base of a combined Fiat SpA and Chrysler Group LLC.
"I would be lying to you if I told you it didn't. One of the things we're looking at is the question of stability and governability," he told reporters at a press conference at Chrysler's Toledo Assembly Complex Wednesday.
