If I could equate this weekend's Waterfest with one word, it would be "creativity."
That's because no matter what generation Volkswagen or Audi was at this event, I would very unscientifically estimate that about 90 percent of them had something very trick going on. From a simple set of wheels to fully worked-up show cars, I always leave Waterfest with a smile on my face. It's probably because there's always a sense of enthusiasm and fun at this event. And when it seems that the enthusiast is a dwindling minority in today's auto world, it's a refreshing thing to feel.
As Agent 001 noted, it's definitely not a Pebble Beach type of event -- it's held in a parking lot in New Jersey for cryin' out loud -- but it's a great show nonetheless.
It's the people's show for the people's car.
Personally, the one thing I get at Waterfest is the amount of creativity put into owners' cars. Take, for example, one particularly interesting Audi S4 (B5) in Nogaro Blue that was sporting soda can tops in their wheels hubs. How cool is that?! OR how about that first-generation TT, with its worn-out interior and intentionally sanded down front end? There's something endearing about the fact it has a set of custom, three-piece HRE wheels that likely cost between $5-10,000 for the set.
I am already looking forward to next year's show. There's something about being surrounded by folks who share that same burning passion.
