The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Friday it is upgrading its two-and-a-half-year-old investigation into Ford Motor Co. vehicles for pedal entrapment problems, and nearly doubling the number of vehicles covered to 480,000.NHTSA said it is upgrading its investigation to an engineering analysis, a move necessary before it can order an automaker to recall vehicles.
The initial investigation began in May 2010 and covered 249,301 2010 model Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan cars. The upgraded investigation covers the 2008-10 Fusion, Milan and Lincoln MKZ.
NHTSA said unsecured mats may interfere with the ability of the accelerator pedal to return to idle.
