Dear 001,
Thanks for your call back to my enquiry. As offered, I'd like you to publish this response requesting your anonymous correspondent to get in touch with me so we may identify the location and condition of the new XJ referred to in the story posted on Autospies.com 6/19/03 http://www.imakenews.com/autospies/e_article000160579.cfm.
Dear Sir,
We read with concern the recently submitted story "Interesting feedback on new Jaguar XJ" published on Autospies.com. The all-new XJ has excelled in our own internal testing program undergoing numerous frontal, side and rear impact tests. Our internal tests simulate real world accident situations in the same way as the independent Euro-NCAP and US-NCAP testing programs do. We also performed more than 500 computer-simulated crash events prior to the build of the first XJ prototype and are entirely satisfied with the XJ's crash performance. The vehicle also meets the stringent US-specific crash performance standard FMVSS208 . In addition we have conducted repairs to damaged XJs and the results are in line with our expectations.
Without sight of the vehicle and the facts it is impossible to be definitive but if, as the article suggests, it was the front bumper and the 'crush can' assembly behind it that collapsed, then that is what has been designed to happen - the XJ has been designed with a bolt-on front end assembly. This assembly ensures that in most cases, minor low-speed crash damage can be contained in replaceable components of the front end assembly reducing the cost and complexity of repairs in these common accident scenarios.
We are extremely proud of the all-new aluminum XJ and would like to investigate this case as matter of urgency. I would therefore urge your anonymous author to contact me through yourselves as soon as possible so that we may evaluate the situation.
Thank you,
