For weeks before the launch of the all-new General Motors Cadillac ATS there was a series of videos detailing the challenges and determination of the ATS development team. While that may not sound so special, what did make it unique is how much of the ATS' product development happened at the Nurburgring.

Essentially, Cadillac was making it LOUD and clear that the ATS would be an aspirational performer and ready to take down BMW. Though you could argue both ways — whether it did or didn't — we do know that a BMW M3/M4 competitor is on the way in form of the ATS-V.

Until now I'd say it has been pretty much speculation and rumors. But we're finally seeing reality. That's because a bunch of pictures showing the ATS-V undergoing testing have hit the web.

And guess what the benchmark vehicle is? The BMW M3.

The problem for Cadillac is simple though: They're benchmarking the E90 V8 M3. Not exactly a wise move when the all-new BMW M3 is not far off with its much more focused product is delivered.

The Cadillac ATS was conceived as a BMW 3-series fighter, so it stands to reason that a hotter version of the rear-wheel drive sedan -- a Cadillac ATS-V -- would be called forth to challenge the mighty M3.

New spy photos seem to show just that.
