Although the greater motoring press harpooned the BMW X5M for being "ridiculous" and not having a real purpose, I adored it. Partially because it was shunned and partially because it was just a fantastic product.
It had tons of space, plenty of V8 power — 555 ponies, to be precise — and it sounded great. Not to mention it has all-wheel drive, which means with a proper set of winter tires it will take care of you when the weather isn't working with you.
So, what's there not to like? Here's the funny thing: the greater auto press will get on their knees for the Cadillac CTS-V that gets about the same mpg, has less space and is rear-wheel drive. While the V is a great car, let's face it that makes less sense than the BMW.
Anyway. More importantly we're seeing some excellent shots of the all-new, upcoming X5M set to debut — we're hoping — somewhat soon. Given the new X5 recently was unveiled, we expect to see something in the next six months. It could even be one of BMW's infamous "concepts."
