Tesla Motors Inc. has passed its first government crash tests with flying colors, winning an overall five-star rating for the Model S, as CEO Elon Musk had promised.
The all-electric sedan received five stars, the highest possible score, on the frontal crash, side crash and rollover tests administered by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, according to test results posted on the NHTSA Web site.
The spotless result is another bright spot for Tesla, which has enjoyed a soaring stock price as production and sales of the Model S have increased. The company on Thursday posted a $30.5 million net loss for the second quarter, beating analysts' expectations.
