In the past several months, more and more spy photographs of the upcoming BMW X4 have been getting snapped. And, to be straightforward, the pictures have been quite underwhelming. It looked essentially like an X3 slantback, which wouldn't be so far from actuality.
If you recall, the X4 Concept had a LOT more attitude and a bit of flair to it. It had more of a snarl and a more aggressive design. We expected the design to be diluted a bit but not so drastically.
Finally, it seems that BMW must be starting to test out the sport models that will likely boast some slight cosmetic modifications, such as wheels/tires and some changes to the front/rear clips. As we've seen with the X1, 3-Series and 2014 5-Series, BMW is moving towards the concept of "lines," meaning you can get a 3-Series with different trims, like "Luxury," "Sport" or "M Sport."
We're guessing the initial spy shots of X4s were showing the "Luxury" lines or something to that effect. Now, if you take a close look, it seems that the wheel arches are accented like the X5 M Sport, plus the wheels and tires have grown in size.
