Audi chief designer Wolfgang Egger is heading for pastures new within the Volkswagen Group. Company insiders confirm that he will be moved to head the Italian design house Italdesign Giugiaro, a far smaller operation. He will be replaced at Audi by senior Volkswagen designer Marc Lichte.

Egger’s move follows the recent departure of Audi’s former exterior design chief Achim Badstübner to Mercedes-Benz. Badstübner’s move had highlighted the tension that has grown behind the scenes in Ingolstadt ever since Egger took over operational responsibility from Stefan Sielaff in February 2012.
