The BMW 5-Series Gran Turismo is one of those vehicles I STILL cannot wrap my head around.

Yes, it rides on a 7-Series chassis, which means it is comfortable and luxurious. But, my God this thing is...hideous. Why wouldn't I just go get a well-equipped X5 than make everyone want to cover their eyes when I drive by?

One would think that at this point BMW would shut this thing down after a rather bleak first-gen model. Turns out they're doubling down for round two. No, I am not joking.

Recently spied for the first time undergoing developmental testing is the second-gen 5-Series Gran Turismo. It is largely covered up but there's one thing swirly wraps cannot hide is its still existent and massive hunchback.

Right now I am at a loss for words, so, I'll let our friends from Autocar take it from here.


...Set to arrive around 12 months after the new 5 Series saloon, which will be unveiled at the Paris motor show next October, the 5 Series GT will be the final of three body styles in the 5 Series range. A Touring model is scheduled to launch in Geneva next March.

The second generation of BMW’s more practical 5 Series variant will eschew some of the hatchback-inspired styling features of today’s car. These spy pictures reveal the rear of the car will receive a more clearly defined rear deck, while the sloping roofline appears to be steeper than before. At the front, we expect the GT to receive many of the same flourishes as the 5 Series saloon, with cues taken from 2013’s Pininfarina Gran Lusso concept car...
