Auto spies world exclusive: Hot new info on the MB CLS
Strike a pose!
Auto Spies world exclusive-Inside info on the upcoming 2005 Mercedes-Benz CLS Dear 001, The E-Class based CLS coupe-sedan showcar you will see in Frankfurt on September 9th was built by the MB development team in-house in Sindelfingen, rather than going to an outside vendor. The car Mercedes will show has the production car mechanicals underneath but modified sheet metal as not to show the final styling. Everyone will have to wait until 2004 for that. The character line of the shoulder resembles more the current E-Class than the production CLS. The production C219 has more muscle in the shoulder and a slight undercut along the character line growing out of the front fender, similar to images we've seen earlier this year. The headlamps on the showcar resemble the basic feeling of the production car while being modified in height and width. What the showcar has that is accurate to the production car, is the flush side glass and hidden B-Pillar. Sources tell us MB decided to keep this feature for the production car, to retain the look of our coupes without losing the convenience of having four doors. The car will probably feature one of the new motors planned, most likely the 5.0 Liter V8 with 306 horsepower and others after that… Trust me, this car will be the talk of the show…Tell your readers to wear their rubber pants when they see this one…it’s drop-dead gorgeous!
