BMW Z4 ROADSTER:
NOT JUST A SUCCESSOR TO THE Z3,

BUT A WHOLE NEW CLASS OF SPORTS CAR

Woodcliff Lake, New Jersey, October 1, 2002…Much of the world may have expected the Z4 to be a direct successor to the hugely successful BMW Z3 roadster. Indeed, the Z3 has come to the end of its lifecycle this past June and the new Z4 has begun its career with a production start in September.

But there is more, much more, to the Z4’s debut than just “successor replaces predecessor.” The new Z4 roadster takes BMW and the roadster segment to another level.

Built on a longer wheelbase, the new Z4 is slightly wider and longer than the Z3. But so much more substance and stance has been built into a vehicle that has not grown significantly in size. The Z4 delivers everything roadster – two-seater, long and sweeping hood, short front and rear overhangs, low and rearward seating, and soft top – in a modern, athletic and assertive new design.

The Z4 places BMW squarely in the field of sophisticated, full-featured sport roadsters. It comes exclusively with 6-cylinder power and offers a choice of four transmission types
[1]. Its chassis engineering is new, encompassing multi-link rear suspension, run-flat tires and wheel/tire diameters up to 18 inches. The Z4 offers amenities and options never before seen in a regular-production BMW roadster. Safety engineering and features have been further developed.

The Z4 Series is produced at BMW’s Spartanburg, South Carolina manufacturing facility, employing the most advanced production equipment and processes. Production at Spartanburg began on September 3, and will serve all BMW markets. Two models will be offered: the Z4 2.5i at $33,795 base price including destination; and the higher-performing, more extensively equipped Z4 3.0i at $40,945. These are modest increases not only in view of the new models’ new technology and features: The Full Maintenance included in BMW base prices has been extended from 3 years/36,000 miles to 4 years/50,000 miles.

THE BMW ROADSTER TRADITION

As new as it is, the Z4 represents a long-standing BMW tradition. The roadster lineage begins in 1935 with the 315/1 and 319/1, two versions of an energetic little two-seater powered by engines that were small, yet had 6 cylinders. (Even then, engine smoothness and sound were BMW priorities.) In 1936, the tradition became legend with the 328 roadster, which began as a successful racing car, went on to become a beloved sports car, and finally became one of the great collectibles of its era.

Another great BMW classic was the 507, of which only about 250 were built in the mid- to late 1950s. Today, this stunningly designed, V8-powered roadster commands high six-figure prices at collector-car auctions. Elvis Presley owned one while stationed in Germany with the U.S. military.

Virtually unknown in America, yet also important to BMW’s roadster lineage, was the Z1 – conceptually amazing, with its fiberglass body and electrically retracting doors. The Z1 was expensive, built in small numbers, and only offered overseas.

In 1996, BMW introduced a roadster that would be accessible to many more customers: the Z3. The Z3 was an instant, international success. Over its seven-year production span, it evolved from a single 4-cylinder model to a line of 6-cylinder roadsters and a coupe. It will be remembered as a relatively simple, fun-to-drive machine of typically high BMW quality.

With its design inspired by the classic 507, the Z8 made its debut in 2000 as BMW’s best-performing, leading-edge roadster. It continues to command the respect of enthusiasts, owners, and the media.

The new Z4 continues this successful roadster heritage by delivering BMW design and technological innovation in a new roadster sure to captivate the hearts of enthusiasts everywhere.

THE LOOK: ROADSTER TRADITION
AND FUTURE-ORIENTED DESIGN
COME TOGETHER

“Every BMW design rests on two indispensable pillars: tradition and the future,” says Katharina Mack of BMW Design. Perhaps more than any other factor, it is the proportions that define a roadster. Traditionally, a roadster –

•       is an open-bodied, two-seater car.
•       has a long hood (if its engine is front-mounted).
•       seats its driver and passenger low and far rearward, thus close to the rear wheels.

Historically, a roadster focuses on pure driving pleasure, the interaction of driver and machine and road. “Wind in the face” when the roadster’s softtop is lowered is an essential element of this highly active driving experience.

The Z4 expresses traditional roadster proportions with an ultra-contemporary design. Its surface development features highly three-dimensional forms and interplays between convex and concave. Highlights of the design include:

•       Two beltlines. A lower, stylistically primary line begins above the outer headlight, arcs upward and then downward into the door, then “hikes” sharply upward and finally downward again to conclude at the rear edge. This line recalls the fender line of classic roadsters. The other, higher line, forming the cockpit ledge, is purely modern and functions as the actual beltline.
•       A “twisting shoulder,” just above the lower beltline and changing curvature as it works from front to rear.
•       Numerous transitions from convex to concave and back again: over/under the lower beltline, at the provocative diagonal line that visually carries the A-pillar angle downward; at the integral rear spoiler; in the front and rear bumper/apron contours; on the exterior mirrors; even in the grille’s vertical slats.
•       Fascinating cut lines that don’t just separate sections of the body, but are visual treats in and of themselves:
        •       Hood’s outer edges, from headlights to A-pillars.
        •       Across the front end, down to the front wheel wells.
        •       Picking up behind the wheel wells to become the doors’ curving bottom.
        •       From top of rear bumper around to the rear wheel wells.
        •       Curving lower outer edge of trunk lid, aiming down to align with the license-plate opening.
•       Four headlights under aerodynamic covers. This traditional BMW element, newly configured for the Z4, places ellipsoid (projector) low beams outboard, compact Free Form high beams inboard. Bi-xenon headlights are optional.
•       Additional turn indicators. On each flank, an amber “repeater” flasher is placed at the approximate midpoint of the diagonal line and behind a BMW logo, radiating its light outward from the logo.
•       Taillights. At once recalling the BMW 2002’s round lamps and relating to BMW’s more recent L-theme, these are a strong design element.
•       Adaptive brake lights. After the recently introduced 7 Series and the popular X5, the Z4 is the third BMW Series to include this new function. Under hard braking, the lights illuminate more intensely, communicating a critical safety signal to following drivers.

AERODYNAMICS: OUTSTANDING FOR AN OPEN-BODY VEHICLE

It is far more challenging to achieve efficient aerodynamics with an open-body car than with a closed one; yet BMW’s designers and aerodynamicists achieved major progress. With its softtop in place, the Z4 has an aerodynamic drag coefficient (CD ) of just 0.35. And extensive development has minimized drafts around the faces and upper bodies of Z4 occupants when the top is down. A newly designed wind deflector is also available.

SMOOTH AND POWERFUL

6-CYLINDER ENGINES

In a sea of V-6 engines, BMW swims almost solo with its unusual – but in BMW’s opinion superior – inline-6 configuration. The Z4 is powered by two versions of the current M54 6-cylinder engine family, of which Car and Driver wrote this in naming the 3 Series to its annual 10Best list in January ’02: “Then there are the magical 6-cylinder power trains that spin with velvety smoothness while delivering thrust completely disproportionate to their size.”

In addition to its six cylinders inline, this brilliant engine architecture features:

•       Aluminum construction, contributing to vehicle performance by keeping down engine weight.
•       Dual overhead camshafts and four valves per cylinder, for optimum torque and power.
•       Chain camshaft drive, requiring no periodic replacement.
•       Double VANOS
[2]steplessly variable valve timing, enhancing torque, power and emission control.
•       Hydraulic valve adjustment for consistent sound and reduced maintenance.
•       Electronic throttle system (“drive by wire”) for smooth, precisely tuned throttle action and seamless integration of cruise control, Dynamic Stability Control and other features. This also facilitates an appealing option: Dynamic Driving Control, about which more later.
•       Electronically controlled engine cooling, enabling precise and purposeful control of engine temperatures; contributes to fuel efficiency and heater effectiveness.

With all these elements of engine architecture shared, two versions of this power plant power the two Z4 models:

Z4 2.5i. 2.5-liter, with 184 horsepower and 175 lb-ft. of torque. This “entry-level” power plant provides performance that’s anything but entry-level. Though these official power and torque ratings are unchanged from earlier versions of this engine, fine-tuning of the intake system and a new exhaust system enhance its response at low to medium speeds. In a June 13, 2001 comparison test of the BMW 325i sedan against key V-6 competitors, Germany’s respected auto motor und sport magazine raved: “The BMW engine is in a class by itself, with six cylinders in a row in a time of V-6s. Inline sixes take up a lot of space and are relatively costly, but in terms of balance they are the ideal engine type. The BMW proves this convincingly: light-footed, vibration-free revving, spontaneous response, and a sound that is not quiet but is outright pleasant.” In the Z4 2.5i with manual shift, this unit delivers 0 to 60 mph in 7.1 sec. and achieves the amazing top speed of 146 mph. Its projected EPA mileage ratings are impressive too: 21-mpg city/28-mpg highway with the optional automatic transmission, 20/28 with the 5-speed manual.

Z4 3.0i. 3.0-liter, with 225 hp and 214 lb-ft. of torque. This version is further refined for an even more exciting sound. “One punch of the throttle tells you the larger 3.0L version of BMW’s stellar inline-6 is a masterpiece: sultry, sinewy, sonorous,” commented Motor Trend on the 330i sedan’s similar engine in its May ’01 issue. It powers the Z4 3.0i to 60 mph in just 5.9 sec.; top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph. With its standard (and new) 6-speed manual transmission (available in December production), the Z4 3.0i earns excellent projected EPA mileage ratings of 21-mpg city / 29-mpg highway; with automatic it tests at an impressive 20/28.

NEW 6-SPEED MANUAL TRANSMISSION

While the 2.5i model’s standard transmission is a 5-speed manual, standard in the 3.0i is a brand-new 6-speed unit. Weighing no more than the 5-speed of the previous Z3 3.0i, this “gearbox” incorporates refinements for even greater driving pleasure (and BMWs are already known for excellent manual transmissions):
•       New, even more effective synchronization of shifting
•       Sportier shifting, via a 20-mm (0.8-in.) shorter shift lever and 10-mm (0.4-in) shorter shift “throws” from neutral to each gear.

OPTIONAL STEPTRONIC

5-SPEED AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION

Available for both models is the 5-speed STEPTRONIC unit that has garnered repeated praise from auto critics. Like all other current BMW automatics, it incorporates a Sport mode that programs automatic shifts at higher engine speeds; like nearly all of them, it also includes the STEPTRONIC system, which lets the driver choose shifts manually by “flicking” the lever rearward or forward. Though basically similar to the transmission offered in other BMW 6-cylinder models, it has been specially tailored to the Z4 with a “tighter” torque converter (thus a more direct response feel) and specific shift characteristics.

OPTIONAL SEQUENTIAL MANUAL GEARBOX

Last year saw introduction of the Sequential Manual Gearbox (SMG) as an option for M3 models; since its debut, SMG has become popular with M3 buyers.  To be offered in both models as of April ’03 production, the Z4’s SMG differs from the M3 unit in several respects:
•       In its Automated shift mode, labeled D
[3], it offers a single shift mode vs. M3’s five.
•       In its Manual mode, there are two shift programs vs. M3’s six.
•       In contrast to the M3’s program selector, a Dynamic Drive Control button on the console selects the Sport mode for manual shifting.
•       The Neutral position is labeled N instead of 0 3.
Thus the Z4 SMG is engineered for performance, convenience and (above all) driving pleasure in the context of these high-performance “regular” BMWs, as contrasted to the super-performance M3s with their exotic BMW M 333-hp engine.

Yet the fundamental concept is the same: electrohydraulic shifting applied to a 6-speed manual transmission and offering the driver a choice of automated or manual shifting. In D, shifts are programmed for “normal” driving, with the accent on a relaxed, unaggressive style – though the SMG automatically adapts its shift points to brisk driving. “We worked long and hard,” says drivetrain engineer René Chlumsky, “to develop the appropriate characteristics for a sport roadster.”
In M, basic operation is as with the M3 SMG: The driver shifts gears at will, either by tipping the shift lever or actuating shift “paddles” on the steering wheel. As in D, electronic controls and electrohydraulic action let off the accelerator, declutch, change gears, re-engage the clutch and “step on the gas” – all in a perfectly orchestrated sequence tailored to how gently or hard the driver is driving at the moment.

NEW RUNNING GEAR:

THIS ROADSTER IS GLUED TO THE ROAD

Expect the Z4 to raise everyone’s expectations of how a sports car should handle. Starting with a brand-new body/chassis structure, BMW chassis engineers evolved and adapted the basic 3 Series suspension concept into a sports-car platform that is almost literally glued to the road.

“The correlation between chassis rigidity and athletic handling has long since ceased to be a mystery,” wrote Car and Driver in its April ’02 issue. BMW knows this: With each new vehicle generation, BMW further advances vehicle dynamics by improving this “stable platform” of chassis rigidity.

Thus BMW’s structural engineers have developed a body/chassis structure with exceptional stiffness for a roadster. They achieved 21 Hertz
[4] – truly outstanding for a roadster, and close to the 25-26 Hz of today’s BMW sedans. A number of specific features contribute to this rigidity:

•       Y-form front longitudinal members. Each chassis rail carrying the engine (one per side) branches into a “Y” to form a side sill and half of the central tunnel. In this regard, the Z4 is similar to the Z8 roadster (though the Z8 structure is of aluminum, the Z4’s of steel).
•       The side sills were designed to achieve maximum rigidity within acceptable bulk. (It’s not acceptable simply to make them huge; this would cut into passenger space or make the car too bulky.)
•       The underbody (floor pan) was designed to spread its strength evenly over its entire length and width.
•       The underbody is further reinforced by two thrust plates, similar to those employed in M3 models. The front one is of aluminum, the rear of steel. Also as in M3s, there are reinforcing braces from the front suspension’s strut towers to the cowl area.
•       High-strength steels are employed extensively for best strength without excess weight.
•       Also to save weight, the hood is of aluminum. In fact, the new body shell, with its increases in size and rigidity, weighs no more than that of the Z3.

The Z4’s suspension is a targeted evolution of the 3 Series’ award-winning concept. In a February ’02 seven-car comparison test, a Car and Driver tester described the 3 Series’ handling: “The chassis calibration is simply superb. It is unflappable over all road surfaces, maintaining traction and stability.” Now, imagine a further developed system in vehicles almost 300 pounds lighter and with a significantly lower center of gravity, and you get an idea of the Z4’s potential.

Strut-type front suspension. Though essentially the same concept as the Z3’s front suspension, the Z4 system is distinct in every detail. Among the differences:

•       Forged aluminum lower arms, vs. steel, to reduce unsprung weight and thus improve ride and handling on rough road surfaces.
•       Hollow strut rods, vs. solid; these weigh 10% less than conventional solid rods.
•       Greater positive caster to improve straight-line stability.
•       Wider track – by fully 60 mm/2.4 in.

Central Link rear suspension, a multi-link concept totally different from the Z3’s semi-trailing arms. The Central Link is a large, curved longitudinal arm, pivoted directly ahead of the rear wheel’s vertical and horizontal center point (hence the name) on a rubber bushing of highly sophisticated design. Each wheel also has an upper and a lower lateral arm, for a total of three links per wheel. The system helps give remarkable handling and riding comfort, yet is simpler than many multi-link concepts. Salient features include:

•       Track widened by 29-mm/1.2 in. over Z3 models. (All recent Z3s had an exceptionally wide rear stance, so the Z4-vs.-Z3 track increase is not so great as at the front.)
•       Increased negative camber angles, compared to the 3 Series, to enhance cornering ability. Z4s have 2.25˚ negative camber at rest, visible in a slight inward tilt of the tops of the rear tires.
•       Extra-firm forward bushings for the subframe that carries the suspension system.
•       Aluminum upper transverse links to help reduce unsprung weight.

Overall suspension calibration. To underscore the Z4’s sporting nature, relatively firm springs, shock absorbers and anti-roll (stabilizer) bars have been adapted. This means a firm ride and very “flat” cornering.
Because the standard suspension calibration is so sporty, the available sport suspension (included in each model’s Sport Package) employs shorter, stiffer springs, stiffer tuned shock absorbers and auxiliary springs. Its ride height is 15-mm (0.6-in.) lower.

Every Sport Package-equipped Z4 comes with Dynamic Driving Control, which provides a Sport button on the console that selects –

•       Firmer steering effort (less power assist) via the electric power steering
•       Quicker accelerator response via the “drive by wire” throttle system
•       In vehicles with automatic transmission, an additional Sport mode.

ELECTRIC POWER STEERING:

AN INNOVATION WITH

SIGNIFICANT BENEFITS

The Z4 incorporates a new electric power steering system: the steering is assisted by an electric servomotor rather than the conventional hydraulic pump. Among the benefits of this feature are:
•       Facilitates specific tuning of steering to the vehicle – shock damping, on-center feel, return to center position, overall steering feel – via software.
•       Vehicle-speed-sensitive power assist (Servotronic).
•       Reduced vehicle fuel consumption, because the electric motor operates only when the steering wheel is turned.

The servomotor applies its assist to the upper portion of the steering column; its control electronics are in a housing mounted directly to the motor.

UPGRADED BRAKES

All Z3s had ventilated front and solid rear disc brakes; the Z4 3.0i gets ventilated rear discs, and both models have larger-diameter rear discs than those of the predecessor. Equipment is as follows:
•       2.5i – Ventilated front discs of 286-mm/11.3-in. diameter; solid rear discs of 280-mm/11.0-in. diameter.
•       3.0i – Ventilated front discs of 300-mm/11.8-in. diameter; ventilated rear discs of 294-mm/11.6-in. diameter.

Also new here are two refinements to the handbrake mechanism. One is a self-adjusting actuating cable, reducing the need for periodic adjustment; the other is a newly designed cable linkage that ensures equal handbrake force on both rear wheels.

RUN-FLAT TIRES,

STANDARD ON BOTH MODELS

Every Z4 comes standard with BMW’s Run-Flat Combination (RFC) wheel-tire system, an important step forward in personal safety, convenience and in-vehicle space utilization.
The system consists of self-supporting tires, special wheel rims and a Flat Tire Monitor. The tires have special sidewalls that include specific inserts and highly heat-resistant rubber compounds. These features allow a deflated tire to maintain its essential shape and guidance characteristics for a considerable distance.
While maintaining essentially the handling and safety standards of high-performance tires, the RFC system offers these advantages:

No roadside tire changes. It will be seldom, if ever, necessary to stop and change a damaged tire. Thus when confronted with a flat (a condition revealed to the driver by the Flat Tire Monitor), the driver can continue on for up to 90 miles at speeds up to 50 mph until reaching a safe and/or convenient place to have the tire repaired or replaced.
Tire stays on rim, thanks to specially developed Extended Hump wheel rims.
Stability systems remain functional. All Dynamic Stability Control functions remain fully in effect, even with a deflated tire.
Increased trunk space. A spare wheel and tire take up considerable space. With RFC, no spare is needed, so the trunk can be larger.
Weight savings. The weight of a spare tire is eliminated.
A key element of this system is the Flat Tire Monitor (FTM). Whenever tire pressure drops by 30% or more, the tire’s rolling radius changes significantly; this wheel will turn at a different speed from the others. Via the DSC wheel-speed sensors, FTM recognizes any major deviation in wheel speed (and therefore tire pressure). Within a short time, the system triggers a visual and audible warning to the driver.
Anytime the tire pressures are adjusted, the technician or user should initialize FTM via its control button at the forward end of the console, according to the procedure described in the owner’s manual. This button can also be used to de-activate FTM, as may be desirable under certain conditions.

WHEELS AND TIRES:

FOUR COMBINATIONS IN 16-, 17-

AND 18-INCH SIZES

Each Z4 model comes standard with beefy standard wheels and tires, and offers an upgrade as part of its optional Sport Package. All wheel designs are new; all tires are performance-type.
2.5i standard. Ultra-open Cross Spoke wheels are dimensioned 16 x 7.0 and carry 225/50R-16 V-rated tires. These wheels are especially light, saving about 2 lb. each and thus enhancing the low unsprung weight already promoted by the aluminum suspension components.

2.5i Sport Package. 17 x 8.0 Turbine wheels wear 225/45R-17 W-rated tires for this upgraded equipment.
3.0i standard. Wheel and tire sizes and the tires’ speed rating are equivalent to those of the 2.5i Sport Package; the wheel design is Twin Spoke.
3.0i Sport Package. In this ultimate Z4 wheel and tire combination, handsome Ellipsoid wheels are sized 18 x 8.0 front / 18 x 8.5 rear and carry 225/40R-18 front / 255/35R-18 rear W-rated tires.

STATE-OF-THE-ART

DYNAMIC STABILITY CONTROL

Like all current U.S. BMW models, Z4s come standard with Dynamic Stability Control, a comprehensive, state-of-the-art traction and stability system; DSC appears here in its newest generation, with the advanced Dynamic Traction Control function.

It has always been possible to de-activate DSC functions (except antilock braking) via a console switch. In the Z4 this requires a long (3 sec. or more) push on the switch. A briefer push, however, selects the new Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) function.

The normal traction-control function not only applies the brakes of individual wheels as they start to slip, but also reduces engine power. This keeps the vehicle very stable, but under certain conditions (such as climbing a snow-covered hill) can leave little power to move forward. At low speeds and in gentle cornering maneuvers, DTC allows more wheel spin by de-activating engine intervention. As speed and/or cornering vigor increases, DTC progressively restores engine intervention. To the driver, DTC means –

•       Enhanced traction under low-friction conditions (sand, gravel, deep or packed snow).
•       Allowing greater use of the driver’s skill at low speeds under these low-friction conditions.
•       Maintenance of full DSC stability benefits under higher-speed, more vigorous driving conditions.

All the familiar DSC functions are included in the Z4 system:
•       All-speed traction control
•       Electronic brake-force proportioning
•       Antilock braking (ABS)
•       Cornering Brake Control, which modifies braking action to enhance stability when the brakes are applied while cornering
•       Dynamic Brake Control, which reinforces the driver’s pedal effort under emergency braking conditions
•       Cornering and avoidance stabilization.

THE Z4 COCKPIT:

NEW DESIGN, FEATURES AND MATERIALS

The Z4’s cockpit delivers a modern design, offering many new features and materials. There are expanded functions, greater convenience and more comfort; many of the features, both standard and optional, are making their first appearance in a BMW roadster.

Interior design is carefully harmonized with the bold exterior design. A pronounced “T” theme defines the dash and center console; here too, the fascinating interplay of convex and concave appears in the contours, particularly the large, full-width panel that frames the audio system, center air outlets and primary driving controls. Instrument design and configuration are completely new.

Unique Z4 surface interplay is seen yet again on the interior door pulls, which make transitions from convex to concave and back again as they sweep upward from the armrests; even the interior door handles are distinctive.
New seat design and construction. Sport seats are standard, with prominent side bolsters to help support the occupants laterally during sporty driving. Six-way manual adjustment is standard; 8-way power adjustment with 3-way driver’s-seat memory is optional.

Tilt/telescopic steering wheel, adjustable 30-mm/1.2 in. for tilt and reach.

Attractive, informative instrument cluster. The dial layout, with speedometer at left and tachometer at right, is traditional; everything else is new. Everything is focused on the driver, with various displays appearing in a window in the speedometer dial; on the speedometer and tachometer dials themselves; and in the space between the two dials.

UPHOLSTERY AND TRIM:

FOUR AVAILABLE COMBINATIONS

The Z4 Series offers four interior upholsteries and various choices of trim materials. All complement the cockpit’s fresh and contemporary design:

Leatherette – 2.5i standard. Black leatherette appears on the seats and door panels; the steering-wheel rim and handbrake grip are in leather. The graphite metallic-finish trim accents the interior.
Active Sport interior – 2.5i optional. In this sporty new two-tone option, the seats are in leather and a contemporary synthetic fabric. The large dash trim panel and console trim are brushed aluminum; other trim is as in the standard 2.5i interior. Available in Pearl Gray/Black or Maldives Blue/Gray.
High Performance leather – 3.0i standard, 2.5i optional. Leather seats, upper door-panel inserts, brushed-aluminum trim. Available in Black, Beige and (as of December ‘02 production) Red.
Extended High Performance leather – 3.0i optional. Available as of April ‘03 production, this option upgrades the leather and extends it to the windshield frame, sun visors and larger door-panel areas.
Sycamore wood trim – optional both models. Available with all interiors except the leatherette, this elegant wood appears on the dash and console.

NEW-DESIGN SOFTTOP

IN MANUAL AND POWER VERSIONS

Like its predecessor, the Z4 offers manual and power roadster softtops, the latter optional on both models. The top is completely new in design and function; both versions include many attractions (new features are indicated with an asterisk):

•       One-hand release/lock*. A centrally placed one-hand grip releases the top from the windshield header or locks it in place.
•       Top header becomes Integrated tonneau cover*. Thanks to a new “parallel” folding sequence, the top’s forward section remains upright as the top folds and then serves as the integrated tonneau cover for the folded top. This makes folding or raising the top essentially a one-step process.
•       Extra-easy operation*. Gas-filled struts reduce the effort required to lower and raise the top.
•       Heated glass rear window*. Eliminates scratches and periodic replacement; improves rearward vision in inclement weather.
•       Interior lining for excellent weather protection and reduced wind noise when the top is up.
•       Aluminum and magnesium frame* for low weight and inertia.
•       Variable stowage compartment*. As in 3 Series convertibles, a softtop stowage compartment can be adjusted to increase trunk space by more than half a cubic foot when the top is up. Altogether larger than the Z3 trunk because of its greater depth and lack of a spare tire, the Z4’s compartment will hold two golf bags or many other cargo combinations.

Fully automatic power top. Another new Z4 feature. To lower the top, the user simply presses a button. The top unlatches from the header and folds down. Raising the top is also fully automatic; both occur lightning-fast (in ten seconds) and quietly. The power top includes all features of the standard one, plus a choice of colors: In addition to the standard black, the power top is available in Gray and Dark Beige according to body and interior colors.

OTHER NEW AMENITIES

Throughout the Z4 cockpit, new features heighten the level of convenience and luxury, yet never diminish the new models’ innate sportiness. Here are some of the key amenities:

Power side-window sealing system. Adopting a feature from 3 Series coupes and convertibles and the Z8, when a door is opened, its window (if closed) drops slightly. When the door is closed, it rises into the weather seal, for excellent sealing when the windows and top are up.

New wiper controls. The windshield wiper/washer system makes adjusting the intermittent interval more convenient than before. Speed-dependent interval adjustment is superimposed on the user’s setting. For the first time in a BMW roadster, rain-sensing wipers are available.

Climate control, manual or automatic. The standard climate system is an evolution of the Z3’s system, with improved controls and a new ventilation microfilter. Automatic climate control is a new BMW roadster feature; for details see options and accessories.

Audio system, 2.5i standard. A brand-new, handsomely integrated audio system with single-disc CD player is standard. Its 10-channel amplifier feeds a 3-way front/2-way rear speaker system with a total of 10 speakers.

Premium audio system, 3.0i standard/2.5i optional. Another significant step forward, this system offers –
•       Upgraded speakers throughout; the 160-mm bass speakers, made by Philips, incorporate Carver long-stroke technology, making its first appearance in a motor vehicle.
•       Two subwoofers by Carver.
•       A powerful Carver amplifier with 7-band Digital Sound Processing.

FURTHER DEVELOPMENT OF BMW’S

COMPREHENSIVE SAFETY AND SECURITY CONCEPT

At the core of the Z4 safety concept is the all-new, ultra-strong roadster body. Within this protective shell, new safety systems, such as Active Knee Protection, form critical elements of the user interface between the Z4 body and its occupants. Features found in all current production vehicles are of course present:

•       Dual-airbag front-impact Supplementary Restraint System
•       Automatic safety-belt tensioners and force limiters
•       Door-mounted side-impact airbags
•       Battery Safety Terminal (automatically severs the battery/starter-cable connection in the event of a severe accident impact)
•       Automatic shutoff of fuel pump after severe accident impact
•       Central locking system encompassing doors, fuel-filler door, trunk and interior storage compartment
•       Coded Driveaway Protection, a “rolling-code” immobilizer system that has proved highly effective in theft prevention.

The Z4 also incorporates some impressive new developments:

Optimized Smart Airbags. Both airbags have been further developed to optimize their inflated shape, deployment characteristics, and interaction with surrounding surfaces and components. The driver’s-side airbag is notable for its compactness, fitting into the relatively small center hub of the standard sport steering wheel.

Active Knee Protection. As in the new 7 Series, two dedicated airbags are positioned below the dash and ahead of the driver’s and passenger’s knees. Because the airbags are normally in their uninflated state, they reduce the amount of space taken up by the knee protection, leaving space for features customers value. They also afford more effective knee protection, and allow finer “tuning” of other restraint systems (safety belts and front airbags).

New-technology side-impact sensors. By sensing pressure change within the door structure (rather than actual deformation as is conventional), these are able to trigger deployment of the side airbags very early in a side impact, yet minimize the chance of an unwanted deployment.

Passenger-airbag de-activation switch. To facilitate carrying a child in an approved infant seat, Z4s are standard-equipped with a disable switch for the passenger-side airbag. The switch requires a key to change over, and activates a “passenger airbag off” indicator on the console.

Rollover Protection. Between the reinforced A-pillars/windshield frame and the standard roll bars, the Z4 roadster has what it takes to maintain a “survival space” above its open cockpit.

ISIS, the Intelligent Safety and Information System. With the goal of tailoring the performance of safety systems more precisely to actual impacts, ISIS employs a considerably larger number of sensors than previous systems. Much of the progress on this front is due to faster, more powerful electronics and the use of fiber-optic cables that are not susceptible to extraneous electromagnetic disturbances. System software can be updated over the life of the vehicle; data useful to researchers can be retrieved from accident vehicles.

OPTIONS AND ACCESSORIES:

NEW POSSIBILITIES FOR

PERSONALIZING THE ROADSTER

Not only is the Z4 a virtually all-new BMW roadster; it’s option list offers exciting and numerous new ways to suit its owners’ priorities and tastes. The extensive range of Packages, stand-alone options and BMW center-installed accessories makes it possible to enhance performance, handling, design appeal, luxury and convenience.

Premium Packages. The 2.5i Package includes:
•       The fully automatic power softtop
•       8-way power seats with 3-way driver’s-seat memory
•       Leather (high performance) upholstery and brushed-aluminum trim.

•       Automatic headlight control (switches on the headlights and related lighting when ambient light drops below a certain level)
•       Storage package (elastic net on right side of center console and on the back of each seat)
•       Onboard Computer, with four functions in addition to the standard outside-temperature display.
Because the Onboard Computer is standard on the 3.0i model, its Convenience Package omits this feature.

Sport Packages.
The 2.5i Package includes:
•       Dynamic Driving Control (Sport button); via the console-mounted Sport button, offers quicker throttle action, reduced power-steering assist and (if the vehicle is so equipped) the Sport mode for the Sequential Manual Gearbox or an additional Sport mode for the STEPTRONIC automatic transmission.

•       Dynamic Driving Control (Sport Button)
•       Sport suspension
•       18 x 8.0 front / 18 x 8.5 rear Ellipsoid-design wheels with 225/40R-18 front / 255/35R-18 rear W-rated tires.

The inner beams are used for flash-to-pass and (if activated) Daytime Running Lamps. Auto-leveling of the Xenon lights is included. On the 2.5i, this option requires the fog lights option or the Sport Package.
Front fog lights. Besides being part of the 2.5i Sport Package, available as a stand-alone option that also includes heated outside mirrors and windshield-washer jets. Standard on the 3.0i.
Fully automatic power top. Though included in both models’ Premium Packages, also available as a stand-alone option.

Alarm system. A multi-function remote, integrated into the master keys’ head, is standard; every Z4 is pre-wired for straightforward installation of this excellent alarm system.
6-disc CD changer. All Z4s are pre-wired for installation in the trunk.
Wind deflector. A completely new design, in three parts: one between the two roll bars and one inside each roll bar. The center section can be removed and stored in the trunk. Availability TBD.
Carrier rack. Mounted on the trunk lid, the rack is finished in gray anodized aluminum and can accommodate BMW carriers for skis, snowboards and luggage.
Adaptor for auxiliary audio input. Like other ’03 audio systems, the Z4’s includes a new auxiliary input for connecting devices like an iPod or MP3 player. BMW Centers offer an accessory adaptor for customers who want to take advantage of this useful new feature.

PERFORMANCE WITH A CONSCIENCE

BMW strives to produce its motor vehicles and other products with the utmost attention to environmental compatibility and protection. Integrated into the design and development of BMW automobiles are such criteria as resource efficiency and emission control in production; environmentally responsible selection of materials; recyclability during production and within the vehicle; elimination of CFCs and hazardous materials in production; and continuing research into environmentally friendly automotive power sources. Tangible results of these efforts include the recycling of bumper cladding into other vehicle components; water-based paint color coats and powder clear coats; near-future availability of hydrogen-powered models; and various design and engineering elements that help make BMWs easier to dismantle at the end of their service life.
