Palo Alto could be the first city where Tesla will deploy its driverless robotaxis, which might be named "Cybercab." The City officials are weighing a partnership with Tesla to allow testing of its autonomous driving vehicles on city streets. However, Tesla still needs to get the necessary approvals from the California Public Utilities Commission and the California Department of Motor Vehicles.
Tesla unveiled its robotaxi on October 10 to an enthusiastic fan crowd, although the event underwhelmed Tesla investors. Tesla surprised those unfamiliar with its plans by showcasing a two-seater vehicle instead of a van or SUV like other ride-sharing services operating autonomous vehicles. Tesla Cybercab might also be the first robotaxi built without a steering wheel and pedals unless Waymo deploys its Zeekr-made driverless pods earlier.
