The current list of production models scheduled to have their world debut at the 2006 show include the following:
The BMW Z4 M Roadster, which is based on the Z4 Coupe shown recently.
Cadillac will show the Escalade extended wheelbase ESV and pick up EXT.
The Daimler Chrysler group will unveil the highly anticipated Dodge Caliber, which has made the show circuit in concept form for most of 2006. How much of the bold truck styling carries over to the production model remains to be seen. Another offering from DCX will be the GL 450, luxury SUV; it remains to be seen if the truck will show at the LA Auto Show just prior to the Detroit event. Jeep will be unwrapping the Jeep Compass compact SUV in Detroit, the concept previously seen, appears to have much more aggressive styling than the other typically staid Jeep sheet metal.
Ford has some high powered Muscle car buzz coming into this event with the Shelby GT500 Convertible slated to be shown. We are looking forward to having Carol Shelby personally unmask this throwback powerhouse next month. Another premiere from Ford is the pick-up derivative of the Explorer, the Sport Trac.
From across the Sea, even though they are made in the USA, Toyota will unveil the 2007 Camry, arguably the most significant model in its line up. To add extra depth, a Hybrid fuel version will also be introduced at the same time. Luxury marque Lexus, intends to unwrap their 2007 flagship sedan the LS460. Several concepts have hinted at the direction Toyota intends to take this brand and it is significantly more streamlined and bold than the previously upright and conservative earlier models.
Mitsubishi will bring the Eclipse Spyder, the convertible version of the Eclipse sports coupe shown last year.
Nissan comes in with two models the sub-compact Versa and the Compact Sentra. This follows last year’s upscale Infiniti launch of the M series.
Some manufacturers will show cars for the first time in North America, including:
Volkswagen with the Passat Wagon,
Maserati will tender the Quattrporte Executive GT,
Kia serves up the Optima sedan
Ferrari tempts with the FXX
...and lastly and most unusually Geely, the first Chinese Automaker to show in Detroit, will bring a sedan, the 7151 CK, for North American consumers to examine.
