Is Detroit Mayor Dave Bing betting the future of his city's financial independence on the intercessions of Bob King, the president of the United Auto Workers?
The mayor could use the help, judging by the crowd of usual suspects flanking the mayor at a Thursday afternoon presser called to tell Gov. Rick Snyder to back off: The city's leaders, its unions and its pastors say they can close a gaping financial hole without his help.
Never mind the fact they've so far failed to do any such thing, that this municipal fiscal crisis is the worst-kept, longtime-coming secret this town has seen in years, that the late-day show of alleged unity barely masks deep divisions within City Hall and the Governor's Office, the City Council and organized labor.
