Dear 001,

Coming to America (cue Neil Diamond). Lotus plan another serious crack at the lucrative US market as a number of exciting new models are planned, starting with the newly updated Elise 111R.

Thankfully Lotus has finally finished upgrading the Elise, now being called the 111R. To the naked eye, the car looks the same, but has a number of enhancements under the skin and in the cockpit that the Norfolk based company hopes will make the car more than just a weekend plaything.

New suspension components, a complete new rear sub-frame, bespoke exhaust, six-speed gearbox and engine management systems plus anti lock brakes are just some of the improvements to the mechanical bits - but the real difference is Lotus decision to purchase Toyota's 1.8-litre 4-cylinder motor (used in the Celica model) which is capable of delivering 190-bhp.

It also has the added advantage of being able to meet strict US emissions standards that the current 1.8-litre MG/Rover sourced unit couldn't get close to.

Inside the old car, only Indycar & Formula 1 drivers could get used to the stark cabin, but again, Lotus have made big strides here offering leather seats, carpets, electric windows and a Blaupunt CD player all for the first time. Stuff expected as standard from most manufacturers but not from Lotus.

In countless European track tests the old Elise was capable of living with serious exotic metal costing 10-times more money, but until now has been regarded as a weekend car due to the lack of creature comforts.

The men from Hethel, Norfolk, England will be hoping that this new "luxurious" (lol) cabin, more performance and even better handling will make it appeal to the US.
