Lawyers for the nation's auto safety agency on Thursday demanded air bag supplier Takata Corp. answer specific questions about when and how it learned of its defective inflators that result in air bags exploding and spraying metal fragments into drivers and passengers.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration also wants to know by Dec. 1 how many replacement bags Takata has made and how quickly it can produce enough to address the problem that can happen in more than 50 of models from at least 10 automakers sold between 2000 and 2011.
